What Makes Windows and Doors Energy-Efficient
Energy-efficient windows and doors are built with materials and glazing designed to limit heat transfer, so they help keep conditioned air inside during both winter and summer instead of letting it pass through the frame or glass.
A few features drive that performance. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass coatings reflect infrared heat while still letting visible light through. Multiple panes of glass with an insulating gas fill, such as argon, between them slow down heat transfer compared to a single pane. A tightly sealed frame prevents air leakage around the edges, which matters just as much as the glass itself.
Frame material also affects performance and upkeep. Vinyl and fiberglass frames generally offer strong insulation with low maintenance. Wood frames provide a traditional look but need more regular upkeep to prevent moisture damage. Aluminum frames conduct heat more readily unless they include a thermal break, which is a design feature that interrupts that heat transfer.
Products carrying the ENERGY STAR label have been tested against efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, which gives homeowners a consistent way to compare options across brands. Two figures on the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label are especially useful: U-factor, which measures how well a window or door prevents heat from escaping (lower is better), and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), which measures how much solar heat passes through (a lower number limits heat gain, which matters more in warmer climates).
